Via Ferrata Sets: High Risk For Lightweight Persons


The DAV safety circle tested the common behavior of via ferrata sets under pressure of lightweight persons and discovered that people with a weight under 50kg have high risk and people under 30kg have crucial risks to get serious injuries in case of a downfall.


Until now there are no special via ferrata sets for lightweights and children on the market. The in the moment applicable norm would additionally need to be adjusted. Warnings shall be in the future manuals.

The DAV recommends to all parents or affected persons to consider this problem. Parents should generally climb behind their children and belay them in difficult passages additionally with a rope, if the necessary know how is missing, then difficult or extreme via ferrata should not be ascended.
