Liability for defective climbing equipment

The responsibility for the own climbing equipment is an issue of the owner. It must not be used if damages block the functionality or safety of the equipment. This can be bad closing carabiners, defective stitching, worn lanyards and wrong knotted slings etc.

Climbing equipment is personal safety equipment and the one who provides this equipment for others is liable for it. The use of climbing equipment needs judgment and in case of the discovery of damages a preventive exception of the affected equipment from the daily use. So if the user to whom you provide equipment is experienced in using climbing equipment the liability maybe is not distinct on your side.

For the use of climbing equipment for rental an independent inspection and certification is recommendable. In case of an accident it can be a proof for the condition of the used equipment for insurances and public authorities.
